100 Years of Geometric Abstraction. For the upcoming Salon Art + Design fair, the James Goodman Gallery is pleased to announce a curated exhibition of paintings, drawings and sculpture focused on Geometric Abstraction. Our aim in this exhibition is to highlight the various modes of expression, the similarities and polarities, in the works created within these parameters.

Compositions of essential geometric forms have been explored with depth and vigor throughout the last century of art history, from Constructivism through the present.

A key figure in this exhibition, Josef Albers, emerged from the Bauhaus movement and influenced later generations of artists with his work, characterized by large geometric fields of flat solid color. Similar qualities are found in the work of numerous American Post-War artists including Stella, Kelly, Mangold and others. These shared concerns later resonated with the Minimalists of the 1960’s and 1970’s, who also sought to reduce and clarify fundamental forms. By selecting work that is chiefly concerned with the square, the rectangle, the triangle, the circle, and geometric volumes, this exhibition explores a specific strain of abstraction that runs through different artistic movements, time periods, and places.

Artists featured in this exhibition include
Albers, Arp, Bolotowsky, Diebenkorn, Diller,
Glarner, Halley, Held, Herbin, Judd, Kandinsky,
Léger, LeWitt, Lichtenstein, Malevich, Mangold,
Martin, Nicholson, Noland, Popova, Reinhardt,
Rockburne, Shapiro, and von Wiegand, among others.

Additionally, works by Burchfield, Calder, Cornell, Hopper, Moore, Nadelman, and others will be on view in an adjacent room.

For more information please call 212-593-3737 or email
